2007 Annual Survey of the African Immigrant Community in MD/DC/VA

Every new year, the African PAC reaches out to the wider Continental African community to assess their needs and issues, and to gauge how local programs and services meet those needs. Focus group meetings are also held to further check the pulse of the community or to follow up from pending process improvement efforts. In the months of November or December, the Board of Directors convenes their final meeting of the year; part of the meeting agenda includes crafting a framework for the next annual survey which is generally conducted in the month of January, with an aim to try, as much as possible, to obtain an accurate picture of the current state of Continental Africans living within the states of Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

The outcome objective is to identify the community’s top priority needs, prompting action for improvements where necessary.  Please find below the top five issues the community identified in 2006.  Please right-click Here to download the full report.

The next Community Survey will be conducted sometime in January 2008, with the results slated to be released in the Summer of 2008.  Please visit often so you won’t miss your turn to give input.

In 2006, the top identified issues for African immigrants were:

#1 Immigration Reform must recognize Continental Africans and their contributions.

#2 Continental Africans are Blacks, but Immigrants.

#3 African Immigrants should become Politically involved.

#4 Creation of Offices of African Affairs & Commission by regional governments.

#5 Bring Voice & Visibility to Continental African issues.
